As far as I understand it, that's not really relevant, as garbage
collection is only invoked when needed. (In other words, a call may use
far more memory than it needs if the memory is there.)

Using gcinfo(TRUE) will tell you how much gets used when garbage
collection is invoked and so may give a rough idea, as the answer is
between the largest value that gives and the maximum available.
