Dear colleagues:

This summer, the ASA will award a new prize for statistical software.
This note is to encourage you to apply or nudge someone you know to
apply.

The award is for software that contributes to better use of computing
in statistical research and applications, written while the applicant
was a student. There is a $1,000 prize plus the opportunity to give
an invited talk at the Joint Statistical Meetings.

The goal of the prize is to recognize software contributions that make
our use of the computer better. This is interpreted broadly, so both
directly "statistical" contributions and other improvements in the
computing environment are eligible. We want to recognize the good
work done in this area and to encourage students to contribute in the
future.

The work should have been done while the applicant was a student. It
is not necessary that the applicant still be a student, and there is
no restriction on the level or the area of study.

In this first year of the prize, particularly, we are anxious to
encourage wide participation.

The prize originated from the ACM's Software System award which I
received in May, 1999; the money from that award was used to endow the
new prize (which is why my name is attached to it). The ACM award was
a recognition by the computing profession of the contributions
statistical software has made, and so I hope the new prize will reward
and encourage such contributions.

Applications should go to Lionel Galway:

	Chambers Software Award
	c/o Lionel Galway
	The RAND Corporation
	1700 Main St.
	Santa Monica, CA 90407
	Lionel_Galway at rand.org

The announcement, with details of the requirements, is on my web site
(http://www.cs.bell-labs.com/~jmc/asaAward.html) and more information
is available from the ASA Computing Section web site
(http://www-stat.montclair.edu/asascs/).

The deadline for applications is February 24, so please act now!

Regards,
 John Chambers
