[R] using fix()

12    assign(subx, x, env = .GlobalEnv)

You could edit fix() so that lines 8-11 read:

  if (!exists(subx, inherits = TRUE))
     assign(subx,function() {}, env=.GlobalEnv)
  x <- edit(get(subx))

  I don't know if there's a better/sneakier/more robust way to do this.
