Sounds like a boxplot to me. If x is a factor then plot.factor will be
called, which gives a boxplot if y is numeric and a barplot if y is a
factor or is missing [help(plot.factor)].

>From your description it sounds as though y is very skewed, so the boxplot
looks strange.
