[R] packages installation

Hi folks

I am a complete beginner with R. I have been able to
install it under Windows 95
on my PC. I use to use it, as a GUI, from a shortcut
icon on my Desktop workspace.

I am very much in need of using some packages for
density estimation from a
two-dimensional data set of simulated points. I need to
build the corresponding
continuous or smoothed probability density function, and
afterwards, the
confidence contours at some specified typical
probabilities (such as 68%, 99%,...).
I have already downloaded some packages, such as ash,
kernsmooth, locfit and sm,
which seem to be very well tailored for the job, but
(shame!) I was unable to
install them; I found out that I really don't know where
to ``put'' them (after
unzipping...). I wasn't able to find any help in
the documentation. Then, I would not know how to make
them work under R, that is,
how should I make R get aware of their existence?

I would also like to take the opportunity to ask people
about any suggestions
on good packages for this density estimation and
construction of histograms from
two-dim points.

Finally, I urge you to email your answers to either

    ORCA at IF.UFRJ.BR

or

    MAUORCA at IG.COM.BR.

Regards and thanks everybody for the wonderful job with
R!!!
