R-1.0.0 still will not run my Alpha-Linux (RH 6.1) - LX 164 architecture.

Per advice received, I compiled R with the -ieee_with_inexact, with
-mieee-with-inexact, and (a guess based on experience with an older
version 0.64?) without optimizations for either gcc or g77. These were
done one at a time (see below). Results were as previously:

The check (make check) output filetests stops with only the floating point
exception - before the prompt occurs (setup_RmainLoop?).
([ctest-Ex.Rout] reports Error 136) and then
Error 2 as make backs up to the top level.

Compiler is egcs 2.91.66. (egcs-1.1.2).

I tried to force these flags by editing Makeconf (without running
configure after). This is not sufficient. Several .c and several .f file
were compiled with the default IEEE flag ( -mieee).

./configure --enable-ieee_with_inexact (or --enable-mieee-with-inexact)
both yield default behavior instead of cflags/fflags with the desired
options.

What am I missing.
