[R] cluttered dates in R1.0, win98 ?

Dear friends. I'm in win98, using R version 1.0 (with gratitude and humble admiration). Could it be that something has changed in the formatting of axes - the code below produced well looking pictures in version 0.99 but now the dates are cluttered on the x-axis and some given as numbers, some as formatted dates. I guess I can get around that but wonder whether the problem might indicate something that should be improved ?
