I compiled gcc-2.95.2 following Martyn's hints, and it went very smoothly
and all checks building  R  passed. See the ReadMe file in


where you also find the necessary patches. The  gcc  distribution itself
can be found starting at http://gcc.gnu.org. Remember then to put
/usr/local/bin  before /usr/bin in your  PATH! If you followed the
default installation path. Once again, it was very simple.
