 According to the Splus 2000 Programmer's guide (P 95),
that software can read a Matlab file containing a single
matrix.

I have never used this and the documentation does not provide many
details. The suggestion is that the file is binary representation,
but it is possible that it has to be an ASCII dump or some suitably
engineered output from Matlab.

The StatDataML approach that Torsten mentioned would be good to have
implemented so that StatDataML can become a useful "standard".
