I see no reason to forego great support, as well as a good package (R
can't replace many things that it does, at least not yet.  Maybe in
the future...).  In my experience, the quality (and quantity) of
support that Stata Corp. provides is quite good, up to the standards
set by most OSS groups :-).

Purity arguments are both compelling and dangerous.  And I'll leave it
at that.  They have no business here.

Required helpful R-related content:

Much, much easier.  Look for the stataread package at CRAN.
(at least until R gets a nice set of longitudinal macros, I'll
 continue to enjoy Stata's "reshape" command for data manipulation)
