My centime's worth:

ViSta has some remarkable graphical facilities... and it's free:

http://forrest.psych.unc.edu/research/

I think that the zooming, rescaling, rotating ... stuff of ViSta is what
some of us would like to see in R.

SciLab is another free software that has some graphical facilities, but I
haven't tried it yet:

http://www-rocq.inria.fr/scilab/

An do not forget XGobi which can be interfaced readily with R.
