[R] [?] RPM install problems (Linux)

...although the present issue would seem to cure itself by RedHat-7.0
including the following

  readline-4.1-5.i386.rpm              156 Kb    Wed Aug 30 22:16:00 2000 
  readline-devel-4.1-5.i386.rpm        101 Kb    Wed Aug 30 22:16:00 2000 
  readline2.2.1-2.2.1-2.i386.rpm        86 Kb    Wed Aug 30 22:16:00 2000 
 
I.e. you get compatibility with binaries compiled with readline2.2
(libreadline.so.3 -- don't ask!) but any new compiles get
libreadline.so.4. 

(and the compilers have been replaced with the gcc 2.96 suite, so
hopefully the dynload problems will be dead and gone)
