[R] problem in making R from sources on SGI IRIX

Funny. From what you show below,  "make" didn't
properly create the base package or did not at the proper place 
which from your toplevel is
      ./library/base/R/base  (a file with some 22000 lines, some 700k bytes)

(or you didn't give us the whole story above)

yes; it should happen from 
 ./src/library/Makefile 
and
 ./src/library/base/Makefile 
You could manually say "make" inside these directories and "monitor" what
happens.
