Thanks again for the useful hints. The problem is that the "safe" method
you suggested takes a long time to finish on a quite fast computer, and I
need to call this function a lot of times. So, I'll stick to the
unlist(tapply(...)) option for now. I'll keep the save version in the back
of my head for an interfacing C/R exercise. (A v.tapply function, or
something similar.)
