[R] redhat 7.0 trouble

Hi. I am running R 1.2.1 on an i686 (dell laptop). I can do simple
things like defining vectors, plot, etc... however when I use the function
smooth.spline() or demo(lm.glm), I get the following error and it kicks me
out of R:
/usr/lib/R/bin/R.bin: error while loading shared libraries:
/usr/lib/R/bin/R.bin: symbol __sysconf, version GLIBC_2.2 not defined in
file libc.so.6 with link time reference

A few more facts...I have glib 1.2.8 installed and I don't even think
glibc 2.1.92 is installed but it is on the disks. If I install glibc
2.1.92 from the disks (and then the updates on the redhat site) would this
resolve the issue? Furthermore, I have updated the gcc-* from the redhat
site...could this be compounding the problem?

I realize that this is probably my fault somehow...I am relatively new to
linux. I checked the list archives and couldn't find the same problem.
Any help is very much appreciated. By the way, I have installed using the
rpm and source with the same result. Thanks again,
