I'll have to correct me. I have just received a spss (I don't have an spss
version 10) file with
$FL2@(#) SPSS DATA FILE MS Windows Release 10.0.5 spssio32.dll Þ
at the begining and I was able to read it. But I swear that the former file
I got wasn't readable (even spss 6 ...).

Process R segmentation fault at Tue Jun 12 21:22:42 2001
still persists. Anyway, I think the way with read.table is a reasonable
alternative. I guess that spss sometimes uses headers which are either
misspecified by spss or the read.spss codes don't get it right.
btw: the original pspp code says:
PSPP> get fil "/mnt/hda1/MUTTER/SPSS/DATEN/FrBo1.SAV"
error: corrupt system file: /mnt/hda1/MUTTER/SPSS/DATEN/FrBo1.SAV: position
34: Bad record type (22); the expected value was 2.
warning: The rest of this command has been discarded.
(read.spss has been taken from the pspp project)
