[R] Installation and packages

Dear list,

how can old installed packages be maintained when R is updated (e.g. from
1.1.1 to 1.3.0)? Up to now we installed all packages (except the libraries
which come with the R base) once more in case
of every R update. Is this really necessary? (Solaris UNIX)

Thanks in advance,
Christian
