[R] Memory allocation in problem R linux

Many thanks to Uwe and Patrick for their helpful advice.

My problem was a lack of swap space under linux, nothing to do with
allocating memory specifically to R.
Having changed my 508K (Zipslack install default) swapfile size to 64Mb (=
my RAM), all is well.

(Apologies for clogging up R list with what was purely a linux problem)
