[R] R 1.4.0 much slower than R 1.3.1

Ronaldo,

If you (as me) do not find anything on patched
versions in the page CRAN (sidebar) -> [ R Sources ],
note that the R-FAQ says:
"Version r-patched is for bug fixes mostly"

and

"Sources are also available via anonymous rsync. Use

rsync -rC rsync.r-project.org::module R

to create a copy of the source tree specified by module in the
subdirectory R of the current directory, where module
specifies one of the four existing flavors of the R sources, and can be
one of r-release (current released version), r-patched..."
                                            ^^^^^^^^^^

My understanding is that rsync works by comparing
your current R installation to the one on the
server (R-patched in this case) and you get
whatever is needed to upgrade.

I think that there is no other way of geting
the patch than using rsync, but I might be wrong.

I've searched the R-FAQ for Windows and there is no mention
of R-patched. I think that the binaries for Windows
do not include the patch, so you would need
to get the sources, then the patch (how in Windows?), and
then compile yourself. But, personally, I would
not try to compile the Windows version on my own.

If you are using the windows version, perhaps
you should wait for a newer upgrade of the binary, and,
in the meantime, use the hint provided by Prof Brian Ripley
