[R] Building R-1.5.1 with gcc 3.1

I have recently built gcc 3.1 on Linux (RedHat 7.3) and installed under 
/usr/local. When I now build R-1.5.1, I get lots of warnings like

cc1: warning:   as it has already been specified as a non-system directory
------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may be off-topic, but does someone know if the warnings indicate a 
mistake in my gcc installation? Or otherwise why they are there?
