RE: Common Corruptible Area In Microsoft Operating Systems (OS) and
Applications.

It has been my experience with Microsoft Operating Systems (OS) and
Applications having corruptible files from their source medias. A few are
found in dynamic data link library (DLL) and in the registry. There are some
instances were corruptions acquired on a regular bases that when
investigated were compiled on the source media that came from Microsoft
distributed medias. The best means to rectify this problem was to contact
Microsoft via Internet, e-mail, telephone, mail, etc. and obtain a
functioning file or files.

The task of finding a functioning DLL that is not damaged is at times, a
major task and can be time consuming. The common fix is to replace the
corrupted DLL with a non-corrupted DLL. There are instances where the
corrupted source media was the bases of the initial damage and caused a
series of spiraling negative change reactions to other areas of the OS,
codes, applications, etc. Once again, contacting Microsoft or the known
vendor or vendors proves to be a step in the right direction.

It is recommended that you make back-up copies of your DLL’s and the
registry. If or when corruptions acquires in the registry it is recommend
that you do not tamper with the registry. The registry architecture is
design in database style and any change made in one area can affect other
areas of the registry and other files, unknowingly. Here is where your
back-up copies are useful and prove to be a time saver in disaster recovery.

The following might be of benefit to those who find themselves in a similar
predicament with an apparently corrupted R in Windows 2000.

The problem was traced back to a corrupted register in my user profile in
Windows 2000 apparently caused by a DLL in Visual Basic installation not
self registering correctly.

The fix was to copy a new uncorrupted register from the default user. Though
some of my desktop settings were altered, all problems were fixed with no
discernable impact on R or .Rdata files. Interestingly, the problem did not
recur when the offending VB exectable was installed again and both R and the
other program now happily coexist. In short, I don't know what caused the
problem nor what a general solution might be.
