[R] Code for simulating repeated measurements or for estimating correlation structure

Does anyone have code to share for simulating repeated measurement data using one or more correlation structures along with random intercepts or random intercepts and random slopes for subjects?

I would also like to have some recommendations for methods/functions for empirically (i.e., without a linear model) estimating the correlation structure from such repeated measures data. Of particular interest would be a method that assumes correlations are smooth functions of the time separation and estimates those functions flexibly using splines for example. The data I have in mind have 15-200 measurements per subject.
After all these years I am still not experienced in repeated measures analysis so forgive me if this is misguided. I have only just begun reading Pinheiro and Bates.

Thanks in advance,

Frank
