Hi,

I found the problem when attempting to compile R using darwinports.

The dlcompat library in darwinports can be compiled with two differing
behaviours. Going into the source directory:
/opt/local/var/db/dports/portdirs/dlcompat/work/dlcompat-20020929, there
are two makefiles. The default is Makefile but a second file is fink.mk.

The README file explains that,
"In the default install the behavior of dlsym is to automatically
prepend an underscore to passed in symbol names, this allows easier
porting of applications which were written specifically for ELF based
lifeforms." By using the fink.mk, the build avoids this default
behaviour giving the same behaviour as in fink
and the subsequent libdl.dylib sucessfully allows R to build.
