[R] R under Sun Solaris 8

Do you have libreadline installed?
Was it found when you configured R?

I can't speak for your keyboard, but ESC[A is the `raw' sequence generated 
by the up-arrow key on an English Sun keyboard, and what you show is what 
happens if readline is not compiled into R.
