[R] Need advice on using R with large datasets

Of course, to state the obvious, if were talking numeric variables:

> (2^31-1)*8
[1] 17179869176

I.e. 16GB, which is about the limit of what current machines have of
RAM, so we're not really in trouble for the next year or so...
