I'm not quite sure I got your question right, but here what I think of it :
   -  if  x  is your vector of £
   -  and   y   your vector of dollars(i assume that was what you meant)

You could just perform a t-test on x and y/2, or a wilcoxon test :
 > t.test(x,y/2)
 > wilcox.test(x,y/2)
