[R] searching through a matrix

      Does the following solve your problem: 

 is.na(array(c(NA, 1:5), dim=c(2,3)))
      [,1]  [,2]  [,3]
[1,]  TRUE FALSE FALSE
[2,] FALSE FALSE FALSE
