You want to do a barplot, as is explained in ?hist.
____

int.width<-c(1,1,1,0.5,1,0.5,0.5,0.5)
surf.area<-c(0,0.2,0.3,0.3,0.1,0,0.1,0)
height<-surf.area/int.width
barplot(height,int.width)

_____
