[R] compiler cannot create executables

%sudo R CMD INSTALL e1071_1.5-16.tar.gz   -- gives th error message

CXX = g++
CXXCPP = g++ -E
SHLIB_CXXLD = g++
I unpacked the package and ran the configure script. It runs with no 
problems.
%tar -xzf e1071_1.5-16.tar.gz
% cd e1071/
% ./configure
checking for C++ compiler default output file name... a.out
checking whether the C++ compiler works... yes
checking whether we are cross compiling... no
checking for suffix of executables...
checking for suffix of object files... o
checking whether we are using the GNU C++ compiler... yes
checking whether g++ accepts -g... yes
