root privleges or not, 'better' practice mandates against 
building as root to avoid inadvertent pollution of one's 
permanent environment;  non-root building is the only sensible 
way to go, short of a full blown chrooted building 
environment (I do not dislike such chrooted build 
environments at all, but they are harder to get going, and 
may constitute overkill for your needs as you stated them).
