Hello

I suspect that adiag() of the magic package is what you need:

 > library(magic)
Loading required package: abind

Attaching package: 'magic'

The following object(s) are masked from package:mgcv :

	 magic

 > a <- matrix(1:4,2,2)
 > b <- matrix(1:9,3,3)
 > adiag(a,b)
      [,1] [,2] [,3] [,4] [,5]
[1,] 1 3 0 0 0
[2,] 2 4 0 0 0
[3,] 0 0 1 4 7
[4,] 0 0 2 5 8
[5,] 0 0 3 6 9
