[R] Problems with Cairo-installation

Dear Everybody,
install.packages("Cairo")
returns
[...]
* Installing *source* package 'Cairo' ...
checking for gcc... gcc-4.2 -std=gnu99
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
ERROR: configuration failed for package 'Cairo'
** Removing '/usr/local/lib/R/site-library/Cairo'
[...]
So, will I have to configure around in gcc? Can anybody describe me how to do 
that?
