Did you update your version of Matrix? It should be 0.99375-20 (or
perhaps -18).  E.g. for me

R version 2.8.1 Patched (2009-02-04 r47838)
i386-pc-mingw32

locale:
LC_COLLATE=English_United Kingdom.1252;LC_CTYPE=English_United
Kingdom.1252;LC_MONETARY=English_United
Kingdom.1252;LC_NUMERIC=C;LC_TIME=English_United Kingdom.1252

attached base packages:
[1] stats graphics grDevices utils datasets methods base

other attached packages:
[1] lme4_0.999375-28   Matrix_0.999375-20 lattice_0.17-20

loaded via a namespace (and not attached):
[1] grid_2.8.1  tools_2.8.1

worked.

R 2.9.0 will check versions when loading a package, but 2.8.1 does
not.
