[R] Using a string as a variable name - revisited

I meant to add that I'm guessing from this:

"What it seems to be doing is converting the text 
"Aulacoseira_islandica" to a number (25, for some reason"

is that foo is a factor, but we have no way of knowing without a 
reproducible example.
