[R] using an objects contents in a text string

ALSO  ....  I have had a play with cat() but have also not got this to
work....


e.g. 

write(x, file = cat(input.variable.name  , file = "", sep = "_data.txt", ),
...)

but this does not seem to work and I'm sure it is not the correct use of
cat()
