[R] finding files whose name does NOT contain a given character

That'll be something like pattern="^[^*]*$" (untested, I don't think I
have any filenames with "*" inside...)

Alternatively, you might try

allfiles <- list.files()
withstar <- allfiles[grepl("\\*", allfiles)]
nostar <- allfiles[!grepl("\\*", allfiles)]
