David has given you the answer. I'll just add that you might
want to widen the strips a bit if you use superscripted factor levels:

   xyplot(Sepal.Length ~ Sepal.Width | Species, data = iris,
       strip = strip.custom(factor.levels = expression(
           'A'^2,'A'^3,'A'^4)),
       par.settings = list(layout.heights = list(strip = 1.5)))
