Is this of any use?

# Data in list - first time is start time, second time is end time
myListStartEnd = list(c(strptime("2010-01-01 09:00:00","%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S"),
                        strptime("2011-01-01 11:30:00","%Y-%m-%d
%H:%M:%S")),
                      c(strptime("2010-12-01 10:00:00","%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S"),
                        strptime("2010-12-25 06:00:00","%Y-%m-%d
%H:%M:%S")))

lapply(myListStartEnd,function(x) x[2]-x[1])

# Output
[[1]]
Time difference of 365.1042 days

[[2]]
Time difference of 23.83333 days

HTH
