[R] wind maps

Dear all
I was wondering what old hacks on this list were thinking about the
shiny new "wind map", which The Economist describes as " breathtaking
for its elegance and rich data presentation". [1]

What do you think of it? And of authors' other graphs? Can something
similar be done in R?
