yum is the package manager for Red Hat family systems, like CentOS,
Fedora etc. 

You're using Ubuntu and don't need yum. You should use apt-get, or
better aptitude to install packages. 

Could you try: 

$ sudo aptitude install r-base 

in a terminal?
