[R] rbenchmark: why is function benchmark back-quoted?

[Prof J C Nash (U30A)]

The function 'benchmark' which is the only one in package 'rbenchmark' 
has a back-quoted name in its first line

`benchmark` <- function( ....

I wondered whether this had specific importance. It appears not.
