[R] openssl package install error

I am trying to install 'openssl' on ubuntu 14.04.  I already of libssl-dev
and libcurl4-openssl-dev installed.  But when I try to install I get a
bunch of errors complaining about 'unknown type 'u_char''.

Thoughts?
