Does here, but then installing NT4SP6 put IE5 on. How did you avoid that?

Microsoft claim that the updater will work on all versions of Windows.
You understood aright, but it seems a false claim on your system.

I am reluctant to document Microsoft's errors in the README!  I'll
add  `according to Microsoft'.
