[Rd] 1.7.1 make check fails (PR#3282)

Today I downloaded R-1.7.1.tgz,
unpacked it,
did ./configure
and ran make.
All apparently went well.
Then I did make check.
On rerunning make check (because I forgot to save the output the first
time), I get

What's going on here?  How worried should I be?  What do I need to fix?

Will R work if I tell it to use Sun's C, C++, and Fortran compilers?
How do I tell it to do that?
