I tested akima after building R with kgcc.  It does work.

Building gcc 2.95.2 on Red Hat 7.0 is not so easy since it uses glibc 2.2
(actually a pre-release version ... ).  You can get the necessary patches
to build it at
ftp://ftp-fis.iarc.fr/pub/R/RedHat/7.x/DIY/
