It was my understanding that John wanted to insert the graphic into
Word. Can one insert .pdf into Word? I can't seem to do it with
StarOffice (and SO help leaves much to be desired). Switching back to
LaTeX resolved this issue for me, though. :)

In the Windows world, Adobe Illustrator reads .eps formats with subsequent
modifications possible (the .ai format is very similar, if not
identical, to .eps format). There is also an open source program for *nix
(sketch - I found it on freshmeat.net) that will read adobe illustrator
formats, .eps, and xfig formats. One can also export to .eps or plain
.ps formats. I recall getting a little impatient with it, but I can't
recall what I disliked about it.

Of course, if you've got lots of graphics, you might not want to edit them
all, so this might not be an appropriate route to take.
