[R] R binaries for IRIX, solaris 2.6, 7 and 8 and installating them anywhere

Hi,

I'm looking for the latest R binaries for IRIX and Solaris platforms. The SGI
freeware site has a very old R binary available which is no good, and there's
nothing on the Solaris freeware site.

We've developed a Java application that uses R and since we do not have
access to all the platforms for which a Java VM exists, part of our
installation procedure involves the configuration and compilation of the R
source code (which in itself involves installing gcc).

Unfortunately, for various reasons we have been unable to get copies of
compiled code from our clients. Can anyone help me here?

I've also been investigating the issues involved in taking a configured and
compiled R distribution and assumming that it's not necessarily going to be
installed in the default or --prefix-specified installation directory.

I found that for Linux and AIX, I could restrict a shipping R to just the
lib/R/ directory and as long as the R_HOME environment variable is set (R is
called from a Perl script), then it works. I ensured that no previously
installed R distribution was being accessed. Will this strategy work for
every UNIX platform?

My goal is to have the lib directory inside our Java application directory
(which can be installed anywhere).

Cheers,
Peter
