[R] error with surf.ls in spatial

Read the help page!  Surely if a function does not work the first thing to
do is to chexk that you are calling it correctly.

Arguments:

      np: degree of polynomial surface

       x: x coordinates or a data frame with columns `x', `y', `z'

Your object midxy (presumably a data frame) is not of the specified form.
However,

surf.ls(2, midxy$V1, midxy$V2, midxy$X3)

works.  Calling it topo.kr (not on dataset topo) is bound to lead to
confusion.
