Sorry to be pedantic but you are a little careless about version numbers ....

1.4.1 last I checked, and that is in the Debian mirrors (where testing is frozen, hence the older version). 
On CRAN it should be 1.5.1, built on my testing system.

As I told you to as well, yes.

Most definitely not.   What I was referring to is that you claimed that your installation initially worked on
against R 1.4.0, from which I deduced that this might have been built without readline or else it would have
depended on it at link time too.

There is no broken depends. You didn't have your ducks aligned, and mvtnorm didn't check for them
either. 

Anyway, this is getting off-topic.  Debian-specific issues should probably be kept off this general R list.
