[R] configure fails on Mac OS 10.2.2

Hi -

I'm trying to build R 1.6.1 on a Powerbook running Macintosh 10.2.2 with
the most recent software update. The latest version of the developer tools
is installed. I have also installed g77 and f2c from fink (the binary
versions, using apt-get).

./configure fails with the following error:

> checking for dummy main to link with Fortran 77 libraries... unknown
> configure: error: linking to Fortran libraries from C fails

I also tried using ./configure F77=f2c, which gives this error:

> configure: WARNING: unknown Fortran 77 name-mangling scheme
> configure: error: cannot use Fortran

I know R can build on OS X --- what am I missing or doing wrong? Perhaps
my Fortran compilers are not the right versions? Would getting them using
"fink install" make a difference (as opposed to "apt-get install")?

Thanks,

Kieran
